We look for families or breeders who want to give their dogs an active live. We try to breed dogs with high working abilities. For that, we like to have future owners who work their dogs. It doesn't matter if it's for hunting, dummy, rescue-work or agility.

The right partner

The basis for every dog breeding is always the selection of the bloodlines. Therefore we search for a confident and friendly nature in both mating partners because especially these days it is very important to breed compatible and resilient dogs. Dogs that are able to settle into active families easily.

We make it an important point that both parents are compatible. We try hard to save the typical character of our breed. By that we mean a high enthusiasm as well as good working talent and hunting nature. Our own dogs all have absolved a character test and various hunting and retrieving examinations. Of course we do not neglect the aspect of looks when selecting the mating partners. Our dogs all have received a “rating of appearance test” and this also is a big factor in the selection of the males.

When we decided who we want to breed with there is no distance that is too far. Whether the male is from Finland or Sweden- if it is the right one Scandinavia is worth the journey. We also have already travelled to Canada and USA to get the best suiting male for our ladies.

The first weeks

When the puppies are born our mother- bitch can rest and enjoy our living room for herself. The first two to three weeks the puppy- box is there so that the fresh Mum can get used to the new circumstances and so she can fully concentrate on taking care of the little puppies. Especially in the beginning we monitor the health of the puppies and bitch a few times a day, apart from that it is just beautiful to sit in front of the puppy- box for hours and watch the little puppies.

When the puppies begin to explore their environment we unpack the dining room in the middle of the house and the puppies and Mum can move into the bigger space. We adjust the space when the puppies grow and in the end they take the whole room.

In summertime the puppies can go out into the yard during daytime if the weather is good. We build a big space with toy park. We get them used to everything in the house and outside. They get to know grounds like stone, grass, fake grass and gravel. They get various toys- small and big- to smell, chew, break and play or hide. We expose them with all different sounds beginning with the obvious noise of an active family life plus outdoor noises like the vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, truck or other street noise.

Of course the puppies also explore the surrounding area. For example all to the nearby quarry pond or in pairs with our family visits. By doing that they learn how to adopt with an unfamiliar environment also when only a small part of the litter is there for support. And along the way they learn what driving in a car is like and they get used to it.

From about three weeks old the little ones get a lot of visitors. Future owners can visit and play with the puppies as often as they want. For that we are quite grateful because the intensive contact with the future owner has a lot of advantages. On the one hand we can give some tips about the handling of the puppies and the future education and on the other hand it helps us to decide which puppy suits which family best. We elect this ourselves and we only gained positive experience since we can work out the character best through intensive observation all eight weeks long. At the age of 49 days the puppies undergo a character test with a trained tester.

We also start informal training in the puppy stage to teach them some hunting- scents/ smells. Between six and eight weeks the puppies get to play with a deer or chamois- leg or tussle with a duck- wing. Also puppy- dummies can be retrieved. Of course a visit into the woods is a must. To educate the puppies with other dogs we use our other dogs or good friends dogs who come for a visit. We believe that the contact and handling with children is a part of a good education. That is an easy thing for us because we have children and together with their friends they cuddle the puppies quite often.

Feeding

Also food and nutrition doesn’t have to stand behind. Basically they enjoy the breast milk as long as the bitch wants to. If she starts to choke her own feed we start to take the work from her and give special puppy- dry feed additional to puppy- milk. In the age of six weeks they can try different tastes such as cheese, cooked meat from wild animals or similar. With that we provide that the new owner can feed them what they want so they don’t have to stick to our product.

Ready for the new home

We deworm and immunise the puppies several times. Other than that they get a micro chip for identification matters. Before we give them away the whole litter will be checked by a licensed member of the “Deutscher Retriever Club” (German retriever club). The puppies receive a Immunisation- pass, the pedigree will be given short time later from the “Deutscher Retriever Club”.

To make the start in the new home as easy as possible for the puppy, they don’t get picked up. In the age of eight weeks they go for a big drive. We come with the puppy and the mother to the new home. This has the advantage that mother and puppy can have a good look around. We can give the new owner a few more tips and when the puppy then sleeps, we leave in quiet and the excitement of the new owner has decreased a bit by then as well.

Help and advice

When the puppies are in their new home, the owners can call us any time and ask for help or just tell us how it works out with the new little family member. From then on we help any of our puppy buyers with advice. In weekend- trainings (see our trainings) or single- trainings. Other than that we all get together for a family meeting once a year.
